TITLE: The Bake Shop Ghost
AUTHOR: Jacqueline K. Ogburn
YEAR: 2005
All three of us loved this book about a cranky but very talented old baker who passes away and comes back to haunt her old bake shop, frightening away most prospective replacements until the right one comes along. Highly Recommended!

TITLE: A Big Cheese for the White House
AUTHOR: Candace Fleming
YEAR: 2004
When the good people of Cheshire, MA learn that a cheese other than Cheshire cheddar is being eaten in Washington DC, they hatch a plan to regain their town's place as exclusive provider of cheese to the nation's capitol. The plan involves creating a humongous wheel of cheese and shipping it to the White House as a gift to Thomas Jefferson. The kids thought this was all pretty hilarious, and got a "taste" of how truth can sometimes be stranger than fiction.

TITLE: Creepy Carrots
AUTHOR: Aaron Reynolds
YEAR: 2012
Creepy Carrots tells the story of a rabbit with a habit of taking carrots from a field, until he starts being followed by giant, menacing-looking carrots. I think we are supposed to think it is his conscience (his parents are never able to see them) reflecting his guilt for something --being greedy? stealing? -- I'm not really sure. He puts an end to the haunting by building a big fence around the carrot field, making it impossible for him to get at the carrots, which we see was the carrots' plan all along. With "creepy" black and white and orange illustrations.

TITLE: In the Night Kitchen
AUTHOR: Maurice Sendak
YEAR: 1970
A classic book by the author of "Where the Wild Things Are" about a boy who falls from his bed and lands in the "night kitchen," which is his kitchen counter transformed into a little city, where he is mistaken by bakers for milk as they mix him into their cake batter and try to bake him. I'm pretty sure it is all meant to be a dream, but it is weird city nonetheless!

TITLE: The Monster Who at My Peas
AUTHOR: Danny Schnitzlein
YEAR: 2010
There are many children's books about picky eaters, but this is one of my favorites. In addition to the old "you won't know if you like it if you don't try it" lesson, it also cautions kids to consider the consequences of taking the easy way out. The story is written in rhymes, but not tortured or forced ones (like so many picture books).

TITLE: More Pies!
AUTHOR: Robert Munsch
YEAR: 2002
If you happen to know any very small people with very LARGE appetites, you will recognize this book's hungry little protagonists who are still "staaaarving" after their first 12 lunches. Hilarious!

TITLE: Nutmeg
AUTHOR: David Lucas
YEAR: 2005
This is a peculiar book about a girl who lives in a strangely cluttered house with her oddly named uncle and cousin, and eats cardboard, string and sawdust for every meal. She finds a bottle containing a genie who grants her three wishes. She wishes for something else to eat, and gets a magic spoon that creates and cooks food, but also stirs up her house and the land and sea and stars and deposits her in a boat that comes ashore to find a table set with more new food. And that's it. It leaves you turning the last page saying, "huh?"

TITLE: Pinkalicious
AUTHOR: Victoria Kann
YEAR: 2006
For a long time this was Julia's favorite book. It is a good story about a girl who eats too many pink cupcakes and turns pink. There are several follow ups including Purplicious and Silverlicious, but the first one is the best (and probably the only one worth reading).
