TITLE: The Monster Who at My Peas
AUTHOR: Danny Schnitzlein
YEAR: 2010
There are many children's books about picky eaters, but this is one of my favorites. A boy negotiates nightly deals with a hideous monster who will eat his peas in exchange for items that are increasingly dear to the boy (first his soccer ball, then his bike, etc.). When the monster demands his dog (!), the boy draws the line, and ends up eating (and liking) his own peas. In addition to the old "if you try it you might like it" lesson, this books also cautions kids to consider the consequences of taking the seemingly easy way out. The story is written in rhymes, but not tortured or forced ones (like so many picture books).
