TITLE: Horton Hatches the Egg
AUTHOR: Dr. Seuss
YEAR: 1940
There are so many great Dr. Seuss books that we are only reviewing our top favorites here. Horton, an elephant with buckets of integrity, takes on the improbable task of keeping a bird's egg warm while the irresponsible bird mother-to-be jaunts off to relax and enjoy herself. No matter how difficult the egg warming becomes, Horton sticks to the job -- "I meant what I said and I said what I meant, an elephant is faithful one hundred percent." When the hard work is done and the baby bird hatches, the mother bird wants to reclaim it, but the lesson is that you don't get the reward if you don't do the work, and the baby comes out as a bird-a-phant, loyal to Horton, and justice prevails!
